my response:
Dear Mr. Markovits,
I just stumbled upon your comment from November 8th. How could I have missed it?
what? ursurpation of the Obama Triumph? What alien dimension are you in?
I don´t want to go on about how many different countries I´ve had the incredible luck to live and work in (and - surprise - was always welcomed, despite being American) because it sounds like showing off. Something you obviously are not worried about. Suffice it to say, I have been living in Europe for a while. And I can and have seen both sides for a while now. And of course, reJOICE - that the majority of open-minded forward thinking people won this time.
Living as an American in Europe during the Bush years did not put one automatically into the "Ugly American" stew pot boiling cauldron. Although astonishment and incredulity at the fact that a knucklehead like Bush was able to get elected.........not once but twice. And in spite of what you assume - that Europeans consider themselves intellectually superior to Americans - a Jay Walking contest would certainly get some surprising results. For example, that there was much sympathy for all those Americans who didn´t vote Bush - roughly 50% + of the population. There is much askew in this world and Europe is not exempt from that. And there is a keen awareness of that. Bigots and members of the hysterical narrow-minded hypocritical moral minority are everywhere. Yeah, even in Europe. You betcha.
Yet you Sir have the proof this is not so?
Somehow I can´t quite grasp what brings you to that blanket statement: the Europeans feel "superior". I too have watched German, Austrian, French, Italian and British news broadcasts and - with the exception of that corrupt mobster Berlusconi - whose primary thoughts focus on his hair implants - everyone has embraced this new American era with enthusiasm and just general outright joy. And maybe the only pride they feel is the fact that America has finally come to its senses. Thats pride. And possibly even a tad envy. Can´t recall any European Politician attracting a 200,000 strong crowd while visiting a foreign country. Most are duller than watching Big Brother candidates sleeping.
There is a difference to feeling superior. Look it up in the dictionary. And your blanket stamping seems to stem from some hang up you have.
And excuse me - but after being treated like the "you are against us" type lepers, with less courage than the cowardly Lion of Oz fame, the EU welcomes this new outreach to true partnership. I will give you the benefit of the doubt for interpreting astonishment for the "s" word.
Moral superiority? I´m sorry - but after dealing with a complete idiot for eight years, how can one not rejoice at the new leader being able to put more than two sentences together at one time? The world is shocked - in the best way - about someone - yes, who does speak an international language - hell, a language even the French understand - instead of a rhetoric that frankly, scared the crap out of most people and not only people living in Europe. This "America against the World" talk, "if you aren´t with us you are against us."
And you Sir, with your demeaning, positively disgraceful "dog catcher" remarks are based upon what? You heard the news in Iceland lately? Or that Germany has a female head of state? Just sayin. Several key political positions are held by minority groups in many European countries. I´d consider a bit more detailed research next time.
In all of the commentaries by local news broadcasters, there has never been the sense that Obama´s victory has anything to do with Europe and/or its supposed intellectual influence. It was a choice made by Americans for Americans and, and as its a global effort on all fronts, for the world. We´d be kidding ourselves if we did not recognize the repercussions for most countries had Obama not succeeded. Many many Americans were aware of how the world perceived us. To deny its influence would be foolish. To overestimate it equally so.
It is simply a rejoicing at the fact that there is actually someone to speak to over there. Someone who will answer with discussion rather than star war scare tactics.
Most Europeans know and admire the courageous outspokenness of all the critical journalists and reporters during what I´d call the "Up His Ass Age" The consistent and continuous harsh criticism about Bushian politics - that continue and will continue until he and his cronies will be held accountable for all the shit he unleashed and left behind. The Keith Olbermans, Rachel Maddows and Jon Stewarts are well-known, greatly admired and respected throughout the world. Plus all the other journalists and columnists like Howard Fineman, Paul Krugman, Jonathon Turley, Clarence Page, John Alter - to name just a very few whose names I can actually remember.
And some French reporter or Swiss Politician saying Obama "parle comme nous" can also be interpreted into - hey everyone, this guy is smart. Someone we can talk to! Thats awesome. (Because - in all honesty - I don´t think a whole lot of foreign diplomats knew what the hell Bush was talking about most of the time. You know, accustically. Not that anything he had to say was all that pertinent to anything - except that he liked blowing things up.)
And not as you have insinuated, "oh, its a European victory."
No, its a victory of right over wrong. What bullcrap you write. Honestly, I am shocked. I don´t know what your hangups are - but you need to get rid of them. Besides, you contradict yourself. And are hypocritical to boot.
